Effective use of the APS to assess your temperament profile (Temperament Therapy), will help you to identify your strengths and weaknesses and help you to live a better life.

History of Temperament Therapy

According to Drs Richard and Phyllis Arno, Man has been exploring the temperament, the inborn nature behind human behavior, for thousands of years.  The model of Christian Counseling developed by the NCCA is known as “Creation Therapy” or “Temperament Therapy.”

Based on the concept that God supplies the “spiritual genetics” that create the temperament, these characteristics can be identified and quantified.

The APS Temperament Profile, developed by Drs. Richard and Phyllis Arno, provides an efficient method of collecting and analyzing the nature of an individual’s temperament or “spiritual genetics.”

Temperament Therapy is a comprehensive counseling model based on the information obtained by employing the APS temperament analysis.

 Temperament History:  Major Developments

  • Hippocrates

    The Father of Modern Medicine
As early as 400 B.C. Hippocrates promulgated the concept of four humors: black bile, yellow bile, blood and phlegm. These descriptive terms were indicative of the internal, physical nature of human behavior. Others later determined that much of our psychological nature is “built-in” to our physical nature. The fluids were associated with temperaments: 1.black bile: melancholy, 2.yellow bile: choleric,  blood: sanguine, phlegm: phlegmatic.

  • D-I-S-C Temperament Profile

Developed during the 1920’s, this profile system was the creation of William M Marston.  Actually, the DISC designations correspond to the Choleric-Sanguine-Melancholy-Phlegmatic designations.  As with other quadrant systems, the center area lacks definition.

  • William Schutz and the FIRO-B

    Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation (FIRO-B)
While over the centuries many wrestled with the nature of personality, William Schutz developed a statistically based method for accurately extracting personality characteristics using a 54 question inventory.

  • Dr. Richard Arno develops the APS

After working with the FIRO-B for years, Dr. Arno discovers a fifth temperament.
Derived from FIRO-B, the APS is an amazing tool.  In 10 to 15 minutes, the counselor can acquire a highly accurate profile providing many useful insights into the needs, strengths and weaknesses of their subject.  Learn what makes your counselee tick in a few minutes rather than weeks or months of traditional psychotherapy.  The APSaccurately assesses the subjects interpersonal needs and then determines to what extent those needs are actually being met.  Then it actually proposes a scripturally sound treatment  program based on the results.  It helps the counselor build a solid foundation for treatment and recovery, and helps avoid errors and blind alleys.
